Our recommended treatment is more than just a standard Scale and Polish – it’s a full hygiene service designed to strip away the build-up of the plaque and calculus that can stimulate tooth decay and gum disease. We’ll also give you preventative advice to help you keep your mouth healthy, now and in the future.
To remove plaque, calculus and other debris from the surface of your teeth – and from between your teeth – we use the very latest technology in our Northampton surgery. As an extra service, we also offer an advanced air polishing system which uses a jet of air, water and sodium bicarbonate to clean and polish.

Over time, a layer of hard plaque builds up on our teeth – it’s a bit like limescale in a kettle. Sadly, no amount of scrubbing with a toothbrush can remove this. It becomes a place where bacteria can accumulate and eventually leads to bad breath or gum disease. While you’re brushing, you could also be missing parts of your mouth without realising. So we can advise you on ways to improve your cleaning technique at home.
A dental hygiene appointment will remove visible surface staining from your teeth such as tea, coffee or tobacco – this is known as ‘extrinsic staining’. However, if the overall colour of your tooth is darker or has become darker over the years - known as ‘intrinsic staining’ - then the colour won’t change significantly with a scale and polish. We’d recommend a course of tooth whitening to make your teeth whiter.
No – you can go straight to the hygienist for this treatment here in our Northampton practice. If you haven’t seen a dentist for a long time, we’d recommend you book yourself in for a dental health check.
We can do a ‘hand scale’ to avoid water spray which can feel cold on your teeth. This treatment can take a little longer so you may need a slightly longer appointment.
