“If you take finances out of it — which, unfortunately, isn’t everyone’s position — then from an oral health perspective, the plan is the way forward,” Chris says. “It reduces barriers. You spread the cost over twelve months, and your check-ups, x-rays and hygiene appointments are, in effect, prepaid.”
That last point is the crux of it. When your routine care is already covered, the little voice that says “do I really need to spend £80 to £100 at the dentist this month?” disappears. “You come to the dentist and see the hygienist because you know it’s good for your mouth,” says Chris, “rather than having the blocker of thinking about the cost each time.”
There is a long-term argument too. Patients who come regularly and see the hygienist simply have healthier mouths — and healthier mouths need less expensive work down the line.
“People who pop in every two or three years with a problem generally aren’t saving money in the long run,” Chris explains. “It’s very expensive sorting out that problem, and it’s not good for your teeth long term either — you’re firefighting, rather than keeping everything in good shape.” A plan keeps you on a steady, preventive footing, seeing the hygienist every six months (or every three, if you need it), so small issues are caught early instead of becoming big ones.
