Nervous About Dental Treatment? How We Break It Down

Feeling nervous before a dental treatment is completely normal — and at East Park Dental in Northampton, it is something we handle gently every single day. If you have a procedure coming up and the thought is making you anxious, Dr Chris Young, co-owner and principal dentist, has a simple approach that helps almost everyone.

You’re rarely nervous about the whole thing

“It’s important to break down the procedure and find out which bit you’re nervous about,” Chris explains. “Because it won’t be the whole thing. No one’s nervous of the whole thing. You might feel like you are, but on talking about it, there will be one or two specific parts you’re nervous about — and then we work out how to overcome those parts. After that it normally goes pretty smoothly.”

It might be the injection, a particular sound, or simply not knowing how long you will be in the chair. Once we pinpoint the real worry, we can deal with that one thing — rather than a vague sense of dread about everything.

Understanding calms nerves

Most dental anxiety comes down to uncertainty. “Unhappiness comes from confusion or not knowing 100% what’s going on,” says Chris. “But as long as you’re fully aware, dentistry is actually fine — and a lot of people quite enjoy getting to the endpoint they wanted.”

That is why we explain things in plain language. “We try not to use jargon,” Chris adds. “Jargon is not helpful for patients.” You will always know what is happening and why.

As much or as little detail as you like

Everyone is different, and we tailor how much we tell you. “I vary the information I give massively based on the person,” says Chris. “Some people want to know every detail — and I’m more than happy to tell them. Some just want to know how long it will take. That’s also completely fine.” You are in control of how much you hear.

Frequently asked questions

How do you help patients who are nervous about a treatment?

We break the procedure down and identify the specific part that worries you, then plan around it. Explaining each step in plain language removes the uncertainty that causes most dental anxiety.

What if I’m scared of the injection?

That is one of the most common worries, and often the only part people are truly nervous about. Once we know that is the issue, we can take extra time and care over it so the rest of the appointment feels straightforward.

Do I have to know all the details of my treatment?

Not at all. Some patients want every detail and some prefer just the essentials, such as how long it will take. We tailor how much we explain to what makes you most comfortable.

Can I stop during treatment if I need to?

Yes. You are always in control — we can pause whenever you need, and we will make sure you know what to expect at every stage.
